As a kid growing up in Chicago, I had my first brush with the excitement of riding in that big red shiny truck with my Aunt Marianne at the Roselle Fire Department in 1987. Who knew that 20 plus years later I’d actually be training at the Fire Academy in South Florida. I can’t explain the rush of pride and satisfaction at having successfully gone through the extensive training to become a paramedic/firefighter. There are few vocations that are as noble as public service, especially when you're in a position to actually save someone’s life. The level of responsibility and trust that comes with this profession is the greatest motivation for me.
I’m happy to be able to share these photos with you from my days at the Fire Academy. You’ll see how exciting and difficult some of the training can be. Not only was it physically challenging, it was also challenging intellectually and emotionally.
By training with these other dedicated men and women, I was able to form a bond of brotherhood that will last forever. The fraternal relationship amongst firefighters is a unique phenomenon that we all witnessed during the events of 9/11. I salute all those that wear the uniform and cherish the sacrifices made by those who protect us each day.
